X-Men Legends II : Rise of Apocalypse is a great action RPG, that successfully removes most of the shortcomings and annoyances from the first one. Not much in terms of graphics or look has changed, the models are still cartoony (cell shaded), but things like character structure has changed quite significantly. I have played this for both GameCube, and PC, but I decided to do a guide more aimed at the PC version, as I beat it on the PC version, and have started messing around with the files, in hopes to mod the game. I have been somewhat successful, as others have. For more information use of the on-site links.
Now when I say this is an action RPG, I mean this strongly, as most of the plot, missions, and general play is all involved in beating the hell out of everything in your path. A computer doesn't work? Smash it of course... There is so many bad guys in some rooms or scenarios where it seems claustrophobic, while in some areas, it seems there is lacking some (the last boss for example). Although once you realize these things, and let them go, you realize that this is what makes the game so fun.
The voice work in this game is fairly good, with returning voice actors such as Patrick Stewart for Professor X, Grey DeLisle as Mystique, and Dee Bradley Baker as Nightcrawler. Surprisingly enough, my favorite voice actor didn't return to play the part as Magneto... Tony Jay. This is perhaps the only voice actor problem I have with this game, except for some of the cheesy sayings and comments to keep the game with the rating it has (teen).
As I stated, they greatly improved the character structure. No longer are mutants carbon copies with different graphics for the same mutant powers, but now mutants have tons of unique powers. This is one thing that they have successfully fixed over the predecessor. Other things though, haven't really been touched, such as the amount of menu jumping you have to do to level up your characters (especially early on when level ups are very short in between). Inventory, although they added the "Hero Stash", is still flawed, because both are very limited, so you don't have a choice but to sell off items, there's no room for item collectors in this game, especially since you get so many good items.
There is some good replay ability here though, because the second, or third time through is still fun, as you are getting new and never before seen items, finding items you've never found before, and even working on a new team of mutants. The PC version is a somewhat low-quality port, but it is to be expected, giving it's console origin. The PC version does host some unique things like 2 more playable characters, and online play (which by the way is not very optimized). All in all, this is a great hack and slash, action RPG that will keep you hooked for a long time, despite it's graphical/gameplay integrity.
