Antlion Troopers Deuce gameplayI'm glad the creator (RomeoJGuyMail Link) decided to expand this series into a full modification, unlike the prequel that was just a single map that had to be loaded from the Half-Life 2 console. As good as the first map was, this takes the series to another level of quality and fun. Taking it from a map to a mod allows a bunch of new features including: score tracking, online score submissionOffsite Link (currently down), team movement control, and (probably the coolest) triggered slow motion.

I already went through the obvious about this series on my Antlion Troopers page. Things like how this game is a reference to the movie "Starship TroopersOffsite Link", and also how this modification is really hard on lower end computers (and some higher end ones as well). Those two things haven't changed, although a lot else has. Like the ability to switch between Low Quality and High Quality game modes when you start. Although I noticed little difference between them (frames per second wise), it might help others greatly. Another really well done aspect of this game is the introduction and title screenImage Link, although the background noises are a little too noisy (the ship engines). The best feature by far is the ability to select/deselect your teammates to move around where ever you want, even though this feature still needs a little work, especially when selecting people to move up the outer wall's ramps. I've expressed the entirety of the situation in the bugs page.

I did find quite a few bugs, as such, I created a separate page dedicated to listing them all in detail so the Antlion Troopers team can get to work on version 1.2. Another negative point of this mod is the voice acting. I will say this: even some voice acting is better than no voice acting. But the dialogue and voice actors are just not convincing, and very expressionless in the speech. This may be due to the native language of the voice actors. I'm just glad it was actually in english. Another thing is the default controls. I don't know why mod makers insist on changing the default keys so all the people using them have to change them off the bat if they don't know they've been changed in a particular mod. A huge percentage of Half-Life 2 players use the default keys, so why not just leave them as is? I was also bugged about how you could not skip the main introduction. To counter this, I just saved as soon as your character was dropped from the ship and then I loaded back to there as needed.

Overall, even leaving in the negative points, this is a very solid modification. And even though a little bit short, it is very challenging and just the idea in general works very well. I definitely recommend this mod to everybody just for the fun factor alone. "Over here, Stetson!"
