Combine Destiny ingameCombine Destiny brings you to the other side of Half-Life 2, where you play as a combine soldier instead of a rebel Gordon Freeman. This concept isn't that revolutionary. The official first expansion for the original Half-Life had a similar concept where you played as an enemy soldier. If you don't like those fast jumping zombies, this mod is not for you, there's hundreds of them. They were added for an extra challenge, but I just found them annoying.

The map design really needs work in my opinion. The structures are very well conceived but there is some fatal flaws. There was huge amounts of dark rooms with no lights (probably meant to utilize the flashlight more). It also seems the map designers had so much room in their maps they didn't know what to do with it, so they stuck some barrels and crates in there. I think I must have seen over 400 empty useless crates (although there was a couple instances where something hidden behind them). There was parts where you could get stuck forever and either have to restart or commit suicide. It seems this was intentional and meant to be a trap, but I would like to have seen a trigger for death instead.

Some weak points I found was both in the starting and the ending of the game, both didn't seem right at all, in fact it may have been the worst ending to a game i've seen in a long time. The "darkness" at the beginning doesn't seem to really be appropriate that early in the game either, in fact it was bugged for the first couple times I played (would keep hearing zombie screams looped, and it never triggered the next level). Also the map "cd12" loads on my computer (and others) with all invisible objects and enemies, when loaded from the game, I had to use "map cd12" in console. Huge bugs like this convince me there wasn't that much beta testing done. Fortunately, to my knowledge, the 1.1 patch fixes these issues.

I liked the fact that there is two (or more?) ways to go in this game, each way has different maps (alternative routes). Maybe I am being too harsh... This mod seems very professional, and I would like to see maybe a second project from these guys. Overall it is a very good single player experience.

This game is available for download on Vapour.
