EA really wanted to test this game before releasing it which is in fact a really good idea for bug busting and testing compatibilities. The sign-up for the beta was lead by a fileplanet form page found here. The link is no longer active of course since the game is now released. The official EA beta page is located here.

The beta was released February 28th as a 1.4 gigabyte download. It contained only multiplayer features, and even that was somewhat limited. Surprisingly no official torrent download was released, and you had to download it as a single 1.4 gigabyte file!
