Shadowrun is the first out of three games that were based off of this futuristic pen and paper role playing game. This game is believed by many to be the true "Cyberpunk" game. Each of the three Shadowrun are for different consoles, and each a completely different games. Snes, Genesis, and SegaCD. The last one (for SegaCD) was only released in japan, and there is no translations for it (that I can find). Supposedly the one for Genesis is truer to it's paper and pen roots, but I don't really see how, it's just a more bulky and confusing game (I might write a page about it at some point).
This game is simply just plain good role playing fun. This isn't your standard Final Fantasy RPG though, it has very neat systems, NPC, combat, and even "the matrix" systems are very unique. One thing I found strange is the background music in this game. When I first heard it, I thought of Sega Genesis, because it had that monotonous Sega sounding music, but when I looked, both games have totally different soundtracks, I guess it's just the Shadowrun "style", and style, it has :).
One thing I love is the combat system, it could have been perhaps turn based, but it isn't, it's a free combat style, which I think is a little more fun, and realistic. The NPC dialogs in the game work on "keywords" that you gain by talking to other NPC's, which allow you to solve all sorts of things just from talking to them. The last thing I mentioned was how there was "the matrix", this simply is a virtual computer world, where you can steal passwords, accounts, and other data files. The matrix consists of "ICs" which are the guardians of the matrix, and will prevent you from going further in the matrix world, so you will either have to go around them, or battle them. Just like the The Matrix movie, the health you lose in the matrix, effects you in the real world, and can actually get you killed if your not careful.
One thing that lacked when I looked around the internet for this game, was information on the matrix. All the FAQ's tell you to get lots of the computer skill so you can get through the matrix easier, but the FAQ's never describe anything about the matrix itself, so I decided to map them out so to speak, but why do it through text or ASCII? I got them right here mapped out through images, plus a bunch of information. This is a work in progress and I only got a couple matrix locations so far, but it's getting there :).
While reading some of the good FAQ's there is out there about this game, I realized that most of them in fact actually sucked. They do so many unnecessary things that there is much easier ways of doing in the game, so I decided to make my own short FAQ in the format of a time attack guide, to beat the game as fast as possible while using nice tricks I learned playing this game.
I hope they bring out another Shadowrun video game, but I doubt they will, since Microsoft now contains those rights, and many believe that Microsoft is against the idea of this game, because microsoft are in fact one of the mega corporations you are fighting against in the game :P. If they do make it, it will probably be in fact a great let-down to any serious shadowrun fan, so maybe it's for the best.
