Morrowind gives a new meaning to "open ended " role playing games. This is the ultimate game in freedom, you can almost do anything you like in this game. Be a warrior, be a wizard, go on quests, deter from the storyline, create enchantments, mix potions, rob houses blind, murder people for no reason, you can do it all! The main story line is very detailed and in-depth which involves many varying quests, along with side quests which you can do. This is the third Elder Scrolls title, preceding it were Arena, and Daggerfall respectively. The fourth Elder scrolls title is Oblivion, which is to be released November 28th, 2005 (now moved to March 20th).
The graphics of Morrowind are still fairly decent, and some areas still give even the best computer a hard time running. The visual effects are stunning, including the realistic water effects which I found amazing. Games that have come out after Morrowind, and even some of today's games can't match the quality of Morrowind's water effects. The landscape is amazing, every little area of the huge world (or section of a bigger Elder Scrolls world) looks handcrafted and unique (check the map section). You really get a sense of realistic landscape, unlike past Elder Scrolls games, like Daggerfall which uses randomly generated terrain landscape.
The interface is decent, but I would hate to play this game on such resolutions as 800x600 or even 1024x768 because it becomes really cluttered and bulky, just because the number of screens that is present. There is a lot of customization allowed though, like resizing and transparency making it a bit more easier to handle. I have a good screenshot of the interface here.
Like almost every other Bethesda game, Morrowind is a single player only adventure. I think multiplayer would actually cripple this game heavily, and there is too many MMORPGs out nowadays anyway, so this is very refreshing. But many people think differently, probably because they want to add a little excitement to Morrowind after playing it for so long. A team was created who actually made a multiplayer mod for Morrowind. All information about this mod can be found here. Unfortunately it is not as good as you think, and unfortunately is a mostly dead project no longer being developed for quite some time.
In a great effort to show that this game is in fact an extremely non-linear game, Vladimir Semenov has beat this game in an amazing time of 7 minutes and 30 seconds. Funny enough watching this video will probably not spoil the game too much as he skips like 95% of the game's actual content. You can get information on this speed run on the Speed Run page.
A great (side) feature of this game is a magnificent tool that comes along with it called the The Elder Scrolls Construction Set which pretty much allows you to modify any aspect of the game at all, and not just modify, create brand new content as well. This just isn't useful to mod makers, but also to people that want to fix bugs, or flawed gameplay, which people have released. Some information on these unofficial patches can be found on the Unofficial/Extended Patches page.
There is a huge amount of information about this game available on the internet. Some sites have huge in-depth guides about every aspect of the game. In fact GameFAQs has a huge collection of Morrowind guides.
